The Sacristan Team at the Basilica of St. Lawrence is a behind the scenes ministry that operates in two groups. The first group serves at all Sunday Masses and Holy Days. The second group serves during the week at daily Masses. One sacristan is assigned for each Mass. She or he is responsible for setting up all of the necessities for the Mass to which they are assigned, including sacred vessels, linens, and the hosts and wine for consecration. They also ensure that the proper liturgical color of the day is in use. In addition, they also verify that all liturgy participants are present and signed-in, and locate a substitute for anyone who might be missing. After Mass the sacristan is responsible for returning all sacred vessels to the proper cabinets, tends to the used linens, and ensures that that the sacristy and cabinets are secure before leaving.
The Sacristan Team is also responsible for the routine care and maintenance of the sacred vessels during each month.
Each team member is expected to learn and follow the norms of the Roman Catholic Church, as well as the policies and protocols of the Diocese of Charlotte and the Basilica of St. Lawrence. Sacristans must be registered members of the parish in good standing, and approved by our pastor, The Very Rev. Roger K Arnsparger, VE, prior to being commissioned by him to serve in this ministry.
A new sacristan trainee will receive written materials, hands-on training at Mass and between Masses, and will be assigned an experienced sacristan mentor for their first couple of months of service.
The primary focus of our ministry is to ensure that all elements for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass are properly prepared so that it will proceed smoothly and reverently in worship of God, and that our priest celebrant is not distracted in his holy ministry.
Most weekend sacristans serve once per month on average.
