Regarding the Ceremony and Rehearsal:
We would like to be married at the Basilica - What is the first step? We’re glad you asked! Before making ANY plans such as booking a reception hall, choosing a caterer, etc., review the wedding section of this site in its entirety and then complete the Wedding Inquiry form located on the
Sacrament of Marriage home page.
Are Weddings allowed during the liturgical seasons of Advent and Lent? Yes they are, but we discourage weddings during Lent. In either case, ceremonies and decorations must be kept very simple.
Can a priest from the Basilica marry us? Basilica priests preside at weddings only for registered members for whom they have prepared for the Sacrament of Marriage. Non-parishioners must provide their own celebrant who is required to have the Permission of your Pastor and for which a letter of suitability for ministry has been provided by the Celebrant's Chancery or governing authority to the Chancery of the Diocese of Charlotte.
What if my future spouse is not Catholic? This concern will be discussed with your priest during
Pre-Cana (marriage preparation).
Are there any guidelines for our non-Catholic guests? Please see
Etiquette and
Communion for more information.
Are there any restrictions regarding fresh flowers used in the Basilica? Some people have severe allergies to flowers, especially Lilies! Please verify with your florist that no lilies of any variety will be used in your floral arrangements.
Are there any restrictions regarding dress? Couples are expected to choose attire that reflects the beauty and sacredness of the occasion. Bridal gowns and bridesmaids’ dresses should be modest and avoid low necklines, high open seams in the skirt, etc. Concealment of tattoos is required. Groom and groomsmen should wear suits or tuxedos suitable for a religious service. Costume type attire is not appropriate for a sacred event and not permitted at the Basilica. Neither is writing humorous anecdotes on the soles of the Bride and/or Grooms shoes. Your choices must reflect the dignity of Christian marriage.
Do I need to have Ushers? It is preferred that Ushers are provided in addition to Groomsmen to escort and seat guests. Two to four ushers are needed depending on the number of guests attending. Two would be a minimum for 50 to 100 guests. Ushers are also able to assist and direct guests to restrooms, help with handicap issues, and with the close of the ceremony. Ushers should be at least 18 years of age.
When will my Wedding Rehearsal be?
Rehearsals for 2pm weddings begin at 3:30 p.m. on the Friday before the wedding. The couple will meet with the Wedding Director in the parish office 30 minutes prior to the wedding rehearsal review the rehearsal plans. Rehearsals must be completed in 1 hour due to other Basilica events. It is very important that the wedding party be on time to prevent any delays as this will
shorten the rehearsal time.
Regarding the Basilica:
Will there be ample parking for guests? We do have space available for guest parking. Handicapped parking is also available. An approximate number of spaces needed for your guests will be reserved. Large weddings may require additional parking in the nearby parking garage behind the Asheville-Buncombe Library on Haywood Street.
How many people can be seated in the Basilica? Maximum capacity is 500. (Please note that Covid-19 protocols have greatly reduced the number of seats available due to social distancing. Check with your Wedding Director for current protocols.)
Is there a dressing area for the bridal party? A dressing room is reserved for 2 pm weddings only. No food or drinkis other than water are permitted anywhere on the lBasilica's grounds. Bridesmaids should come dressed.
Only the bride should plan on dressing at the Basilica - and only if absolutely necessary as our building is not well equipped for this activity.
Where do the groom & his entourage wait? They may gather in the Main Vestibule of the Basilica. No food or drinks other than water are permitted anywhere on the Basilica's grounds.
What do we do in inclement weather? Unfortunately, our walkways are uncovered. Please be prepared in case of rain. We do not provide umbrellas.
